    William Safire on Effective Style

    As part of its coverage of the 1996 Democratic Convention, PBS presented an interview with William Safire about effective oratorical style for a speech to accept the nomination for the presidency. In this exercise, listen to a RealAudio version of the interview with Safire that was conducted by David Gergen. You may also read the transcript of the interview at the same address. Then, listen to one of the speeches presented by the nominees to assess how well that speaker's style fulfilled some of the standards recommended by Safire.
